Tileset in a month challenge!

I really like those "do something hard in a short time" challenges.  I join them all the time, often to fail spectacularly, but I don't mind (much).  I like the rush of trying really hard with other like minded challengers, and the structure of it helps me focus and be more creative.  Even if I don't make it to the finish line I've gotten farther on those fun projects than I would on my own.

This time I'm doing my own sort of challenge, one I made up for myself.  I have no idea if it'll work, since I'm missing the competitive element, but it's worth a try.  In the month of September I'm going to try and make a small art pack for RPG Maker.  If anyone wants to join me, they're more than welcome.

In order for me to succeed I will need to have made:
  • At least 1/2 of each A type tile sheets
  • 2 Full B-E type tile sheets
  • 3 Character sheets
    • 1 sheet of people
    • 1/2 sheet of doors
    • 1/2 a sheet of  boxes
    • 1 sheet of other animations
      • moving objects
      • behavioral sprites
      • switches
      • lights
  •  1 window skin
Of course, that isn't all I want to do.  I'm ambitious, I'd like to have much more completed before the end of the month.  This is the minimum.

I've decided to make the whole thing in the same style as the Old School Modern Tile Pack One.  It's a simpler style than my Pixel Myth packs, and a smaller tile size, so it should work up more quickly.  It's also a style that people keep asking for more of.  I've already gotten permission from Despain, so I'm good to go.  Of course, I could just expand my Tiny 16 pack and it would be just as simple and quick but my set isn't as popular.

I'd like to start Monday, but there's a big family reunion over the long weekend and I won't be home.  So I'll just have to start Tuesday.  I'm going to be posting here every week day explaining what I accomplished.  Any sort of feedback, support, or indication that someone reads this silly blog should help.  To make the posts more interesting to people other than me I'll try include information on the process I go through when making tiles.

Wish me luck!

  1. Do me a favor and spend more time on your tile art than explaining it! That's what my brain likes to do to distract me from hard things. ;)

I've got a big goal for the next few months too. I'm going to help update a site of a friend that I've been trying to help with for two years or more. It's WP, and I don't know WP very well, but I'm committing to spending 15-20 hr/wk on it until it is finished. No more talking! Only doing!!

    1. I'm only writing these things up during breaks as a way to keep me motivated. One of the ways to stay motivated during something like this to get others involved, that way it's much harder to talk yourself out of it. I get more done more consistently because I know that people are expecting something from me every day. Don't worry, it's helping, not hurting.

This isn't all that different from the post I made for the Game Making Drive that's held from time to time at the RPG Maker forums. That's why I'm doing it this way, I know that it works for me.

You should tell me about your daily progress too. You can keep it super short, just say things like "wrote a few lines of code but they didn't work" or whatever you want. I'll help you stay on task too!

    2. This is a great idea, and your daily posts will help me not forget. I'm going to be posting over in Tesana Muses. I hope you'll comment sometimes! :D

      Edit: for proper nesting
