Magnet Doll has a Brother

I've been working on my magnet doll again today.  I decided that 150 dpi was much too small for something I wanted to work on for a while, it would be better to fix the problem now and make something I was proud of.  Live trace didn't work though, I lost too many details and it kept trying to do odd things with it like make a white background and color the lines grey.  I finally gave up and just increased the size, then ran a sharp filter and touched up the lines.  Took a while, but you can't tell it was once half this size.  I've also made a twin brother for her.  There should be more guy dress ups.

I tried my best to make him look properly masculine even though I just altered the girl's base to make him.  Hopefully I succeeded.  I'm not as good at drawing guys as I am at girls.

I'm at the point with this where I need to decide how I want to organize this.  They'll both need a name, possibly a logo (because it'd be cool), and some choices on how they'll be colored.  I need to figure out how I'll be arranging the bases on the page so that it doesn't waste magnet paper.  I don't want to have clothes in the base set because I like the idea that you can just print your base and then the clothing sets you like separately.  Speaking of clothes, I'd appreciate suggestions for costumes or themes that you'd like to see.

Since sizing up the bases are about 5.5 inches high.  I'm going look at some tins this weekend, and decide if that's the right size for it.  I may actually end up scaling it down a little after all.  I don't mind though, it's better to scale down than up.  This time I can keep drawing while I decide.

  1. Give them both a set of fancy clothes, some swimsuits, play clothes for winter and summer. I think the hair idea for the girl is fun that you can change her hair. My kids love the animals that come with the strawberry shortcake dolls. You could also consider weather they would be mostly played on the go, or at home. If at home it would be so awesome to make a house that you could put on a cookie sheet, and they could play with it that way. Could the girls swimsuit/underclothes have thin straps that are still easy enough to make a variety of clothes for? The other idea I have with the hair for the girl is that you could make her have cute hair, that doesn't change, but could give her accessories that change up her hair (hats, flowers, a veil?) How old are the characters? do they have little siblings, could they get married and have a wedding clothes? Or do they more relate to the ages of the kids that would play with them (5-12?)

    1. You have a lot of great ideas! I will definitely be doing the pets. I was intending to do tiny items to fill in gaps of all the doll's pages, so things like flowers and ribbons will likely be common. I'll have to keep the idea of playset items like houses and trees in mind for later as well. Right now I'd like to focus on clothes.

I don't really want to put straps on the girl's underclothes. I've tried it on other dolls, and it's amazing how quickly and easily they get in the way. I will be making separate swimwear for both bases. A water based set will be easy and quick, I think I'll do that first.

The dolls don't have an age, I want it flexible so they can wear a wider range of clothing. The point of these bases is to make it easy to just pump out clothing for, so making a wider variety of sizes may not be a good idea. I've been thinking about making other faces though, and a baby base may not be amiss, I'll have to think about it.

  2. I bet a Halloween costume could also be fun.

    1. Having a set of typical costumes like a witch or vampire would be fun to have come October. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so this will happen.

  3. So awesome! I'd like to see super hero costumes (because I just saw Avengers and it was awesome), and some historical-eastern clothing (like Mongolian costumes or feudal Japan).

    1. The funny thing is, I think the boy base looks a bit like Loki. So now the question is, generic superhero/villain or licensed characters? Either way, great idea. I think I need to start a list!

    2. Oh, almost forgot! The fonts on this page are Josefin Sans for the majority and Calligrafitti for the titles.
